インド文化圏と呼ばれる地域は多民族・多言語社会として知られ, そこにおいて形成される文化の複合構造がその最も大きな特徴をなしている.複合文化形成のメカニズムを考察するにあたり, 二つの極からの動きを考えることができる. 一方にはM.エリアーデの言うASIANIZED INDIAの中核的概念の代表されるような, サンスクリット語の担い手である「上層文化」による汎アジア的な「土着要素」の消化があり, 他方, 逆の動きとして, 民俗文化を背負った層によるサンスクリット文化の模倣吸収(M.N.シュリーニヴァースの言うSanskritization)がある.本研究では上記ふたつのダイナミックスが明瞭に観察できる北インドのガンジス河流域, 特にビハール州及びこれと境を接するネパール中・南部を中心に, 広域的な調査により, 複合文化の動態・文化接触・統合のメカニズムとその動因を, 宗教学・文献学・文化人類学・言語学の観点から学際的に調査・研究し, それに関する資料の集積とモデル化を行うことを目的とする.言語学的調査としては, ベナレス市・パトナ市及び同市南郊におけるチベット語とヒンディー語・マラーティー語との接触を, 北村が音韻論の立場から, 又, 長野が統辞論の立場から記述分析を行った. 更にカトマンス市近郊において, タマン語(北村)及びネワール語(長野)とネパール語のそれを, 上と同様の観点から観察し, アーリア諸語のアジア化或いはチベット・ビルマ系諸語のアーリア化の動因を調査した. この結果, 基礎的資料の集積と言う点で成果が挙がったが, ガルワール語の調査は不成功に終わった.文化人類学的調査としては, 岩田が農耕儀礼, 飯島・カランが婚姻習俗を中心に, ガンジス河流域の広域的比較調査を行い, 他方, 石井が人生儀礼を, 関根が社会構造をそれぞれ軸とする, ネパール中・南部及びビハール北西部の局所的調査を実施した. そこに作動する複合文化形成動因を明確にするため, 飯島・カラン・関根はタミール・ナドゥ州での比較調査をも併せて行った. 儀礼に関する新資料や婚姻習俗についての貴重な統計資料が蓄積された.宗教学的調査としては, 宗教儀礼におけるアーリア文化と土着要素の統合関係を, 井狩・田中が広域的比較調査により, 又, 永ノ尾がビハール及びネパール中部の集中的調査により, 解明することを試みた. 又, 立川はこれに仏教という観点を加味し, ネパール中部において永ノ尾と同様のフィールドワークを行った. この結果, 特に, 土着要素に関する部分で見るべき成果が挙った.63・64年度も同様の調査研究を続行して資料を更に蓄積し, 分析の精度を上げる方向で研究を進めたい.

Cultural circles and regions are multi-ethnic and multi-lingual societies, and cultural complex structures are formed and characterized.
