大英図書館・大英博物館蔵する全和漢書の調査を行い, 書誌学的な審定を施して, 蔵書目録と図録を作成公刊する.又, 東西ベルリンの国立図書館蔵する, ドイツ探険隊が, 中国トルファン地方から持ち帰った資料を調査し, なかんずく唐代の印刷物を精査して図録を作成する昭和59年度は, アーネスト・サトウ,ケンペル,アストンコレクション等の調査を行ったが,本年度(62年度)はシーボルトコレクション,館指定の貴重書,写本類等の調査を実施した. 調査総数は約2500部であったが,主体は何といってもシーボルトコレクションであった.シーボルトコレクションの著しい特長は,従来いわれている歴史,地理,民俗の分野にとどまらず,彼が日本に滞在した幕末(文政・文久)の頃に出版された,当時のあらゆる分野,文学,芸能,言語,宗教,芸術,動植物,さらには自ら編集した独(蘭)日辞書,写山等々の書物が網羅されていることである. アーネスト・サトウのコレクションのように,善本稀書こそないが,幕末の日本文化総体を窺い知るためには欠かせないものばかりである. これ程にまとまった文化史資料群は,わが国内にも見当らない.また, 過去二度にわたる調査は, 大英図書館日本部の研究者が個人的に作成したコクレション別リストに従って進められた. しかしそれらは所蔵全古典籍の一部にすぎず,そのため本調査は調査採取と併行して,登録全蔵書カード(約20万部)のなかから古典籍を抽出する作業も行わねばならなかった. その結果,大英図書館が蔵する和漢古典籍の総数は約4500部(15000冊)であることが初めて判明した.ルコック将来のトルファン出土印刷物の調査は,東ベルリン国立図書館東アジア研究所で行われ,約300点の印刷物について調書がとられた. われわれの審定によれば,従来の審定とは大いに異なり,唐代の印刷物が多数含まれており,これによって,中国古代印刷史の謎を解く鍵が与えられたと思っている.

The investigation of the printed matter unearthed in the future was carried out by the National Library of China, and about 300 points of printed matter were investigated. Most of the printed matter of Tang Dynasty contains the mystery of ancient printing history of China.
