語彙の能力尺度は同じ生育環境で習得した集団では, 1次元性の高いものであるが, 習得条件の異なる帰国子女, 外国人日本語習得者などでは異なった語彙構造をもつことが予想される. このような個人差を組み込むことのできるモデルの一つとして, 一般項目反応理論を適用することとし, その解析のためのプログラムを開発した. これは各項目の項目困難度と項目識別力に関するパラメタを2つ, 各被験者の個人特性値と個人識別力を2つ, 計4個のパラメタを有するものである. このようなモデルによる個人差の記述の可能性を実証するために, 帰国子女と外国人留学生とに特別に編集した語彙テストを実施した. このテストは, これまでの研究により統計的特性の明らかにな語彙項目315項目からなるもので, その中には困難度の低い項目(通常の小学校1年生程度)から困難度の高い項目(大学生程度)までを含んでいる. これによって, かなり広範囲の能力水準に対しても, 個人識別力の推定が可能となっている. 現在までに分析の済んだ外国人留学生10名の結果によると, 個人識別は.02から.19の間に分布しており, これを日本人対照群の分布(.21から1.16)に比べると, 極めて顕著な差異のあることがわかる. ここでもちいられた被験者の語彙能力の特性値は, 高低さまざまであるが, それにもかかわらず, 個人識別力パラメタの推定値が, このように日本人と外国人の語彙構造の差異を反映していることは, 注目に値する. 今後, 被験者数をさらに増やし, 上記知見を確実なものとしたい.
