(1)予想していたとおり, 青年期教育における教師・生徒関係に焦点をあわせた歴史的研究はいたってとぼしい. 研究著書・論文ばかりでなく, この主題に迫るための便利な刊行史料の類もあまり期待できない. このことは, メァリーランド大学のバーバラ・フィンケルシュタイン教授との文通その他を通じてほぼ確認できた. とくに史料については, 現地へ行って個別学校レベルや, 地方公共図書館などを調査しなくてはならない. (2)先行研究と史料状況が上記のとおりであるから, 多様な文書等のなかに断片的に埋れている事実を効果的に掘りおこすことができるように, 方法論を工夫し, しっかりとした枠組を考案しなければならない. その点で, 少し古いが, デーヴィッド・リースマンの『孤独な群衆』はたいへん示唆的であった. これは歴史的研究ではないが, 巨視的な時系列に沿った変化をとりあつかっている. そのなかで, 「伝統指向」, 「内部指向」, 「他人指向」のそれぞれの時代における両親の役割, 教師の役割の特徴が描かれている. とりわけ「内部指向」の時代の教師と生徒の関係はインパースナルであることが特徴であったという指摘は興味ぶかい. 内面性を重視するがゆえに教師はそこへ介入することを控え, 知的な教育にとどまり, 価値の教育は両親の役割とみなされた, というのである. このほかリースマンは, 各時代ごとの仲間関係やメディアの影響にも目を配っている. これはもちろんおおまかなシェーマである. しかしこれを史実によって肉づけしたり精密にする仕事ですらあまり着手されていないが, 十分に啓発的であるように思う. (3)時代と領域を限った個別研究ではあるが, David F.Allmendinger Jr.のPaupers and Scholars(1975)は19世紀の中葉のカレッジにおける学生のライフスタイルの変化が教授の権威の変質を伴うことを描いていて参考になる.
