项目摘要

1.単純群をできるだけ初等的かつ自然で統一的に把握するための研究の一環として, 研究代表者岩崎は従来の諸研究の一部を整理しながら, 5つのMathieu群に付随する幾何である5つの(Mathieu-)Wittシステムを組合せ論的に扱って結果を得た. 即ち, これら5つのシステムは従来大小の2グループに分けて別々に扱われがちであったが, 我々の研究では, 5つのシステムをできるだけ統一的かつ初等的に構成・記述した. 特に, 差型または代表ブロックという概念を導入して, 全てのブロックを統一的に記述する簡単な一つの方法を得た. この方法によって, たとえばシステムW_<24>, W_<12>に於いて, 与えられた5点を含む唯一のブロックを容易に見つけることができる. また, 5-デザインW_<12>を特別の場合として含む無限クラスの3-デザインを構成し, その全てのブロックの具体的な形も与えた.2.MonsterやConway群などの単純群と保型形式との驚くべき関係が数年前から注目され研究されているが, それに関する興味ある事実を分担者山田は電子計算機を用いて調べた.
