北部九州・山口地方は歴史上, 古くより大陸からの文化や人の受入口としての役割を担ってきた地方であり, そこに住む人々の形質の時代変化や地域的特色を明らかにすることは日本人の系譜を探る上でも重要な課題となる. そこで当地方出土の縄文から現代にいたるまでの人骨資料を用いて, 下記の事項の時代変化を追った. 用いた資料は, 縄文人(23体), 弥生人(393体), 古墳人(132体), 中世人(45体), 近世人(76体), 現代人(131体), の計800体である.1.頭蓋計測値:脳頭蓋では, 頭長幅示数の変化が顕著で, 中世に最も長頭性が強くなり, 以後は現代にいたるまでかなりの短頭化が進んでいる. ただ他地方と比較した場合, 当地方の現代人はまだかなり長頭傾向を残している. また, 頭高値は古墳時代から中世にかけて高くなり, 以後は大きな変化を示さない. 顔面部ではより顕著な変化が認められ, その中で最も注目すべきは, 顔高が縄文から弥生にかけて急激に高くなっている点である. 眼窩や鼻部でもそれぞれ高型への変化が著しく, その後, 時代とともに中世までは逆にまた低顔化し, 以後, 現代まで再び高顔化するという複雑な変化を示した. この点において関東地方での時代変化と著しい差異をみせており, 当地方の特異性として, その変化の原因を考える上にも重要な知見になるものと考える.2.四肢骨計測値:身長の変化がやはり特異な動きを見せ, 顔高同様, 縄文から弥生へと高くなり, 以後は近世まで低くなった後, 明治以後に急激な高身長化をみせる. その他, 顔面平坦度や性差, あるいは顔面高径の部位別比較等を通して, 当地方人の縄文から弥生への変化において, 関東地方人と大きな相異点のあることが明らかとなり, この時代の大陸からの遺伝的影響を示唆する結果が得られた.
