牛島・末広等の結婚生活研究(昭28)から已に30年余が経過し, 日本での結婚も現在では見合い結婚より恋愛結婚の方が多くなっている. それ故, 夫婦の経時的な結婚幸福度曲線は, 前回調査とはかなり異なったものになると予想された. 図1に示したように, 今回調査では夫婦とも, 前回の日本における調査より, ターマンが行なった米国の夫婦が描いたカーブに類似している. まず夫と妻の幸福点を比較すると, 今回はターマンの場合と同様, 妻の方が全体的に幸福度が高く, 夫婦とも中間で下降する. 妻は結婚当初, 幸福点が最高でそれ以後, 経過年数30年で多少上昇するが下降の一途をたどる. 前回との類似点は, 現在でもやはり妻は晩年になって夫より幸福点が低いということである. 恋愛結婚が優勢な現代においても, 日本の家庭は牛島が当時指摘しているように, 妻の犠牲の上に成り立っているのであろうか.夫婦感の幸福点は, 非常に高い相関を示した(Y=22.5+0.67x,r=0.498(p<0.0000),n=799). 幸福度に影響を及ぼす生活諸条件としては, 夫婦の就業形態, 居住地, 子供数, 年収, 別居経験の有無がある. 結婚成立過程では, 見合恋愛による差は少なく, 結婚の意志決定者, 幸福な結婚と思ったが, 交際期間, 親の態度が影響を及ぼす. 経過過程では, 結婚当初の夢と現実との開き, 相手の態度の変化, 倦怠期の有無等がある. 現在の状態としては, 相手への愛情, 家計の取扱い, 子供の世話, 家事, 習慣, 趣味, 人生観, レクリェーション, 義理の親や家族への態度, 性生活等の一致, もう一度生まれるとしたら誰と結婚するか, 家庭生活への満足度等が大きな影響を及ぼしている.
