The objective of this project is to develop effective access control / switching scheme for high speed optical fiber ring networks. This project has proposed a new control system named Resolvable-Contention Ring or simply ReC-ring. ReC-ring is based on Contention-ring, which is an integrated contention/virtual token-passing access control scheme, and introduces a resolution function of packet collision in the ring without serious hardware/software overhead. The project has constructed a specialized computer simulator for analyzing high-speed ring networks in detail and shown the effectiveness and validity of ReC-ring over other representative access control schemes, like Token-ring, Slotted-ring, and C-ring in wide range of ring network environment, quantitatively. Further, on the base of access control technology for high-speed optical ring networks, this project also has presented a new high-speed packet switching architecture by introducing multiple optical ring networks which are connected by packet overflow buffer and link. The project has shown the validity of this new architecture especially for multiple virtual links situation of multimedia data communications by both computer simulation and mathematical analysis.
