本研究の主な目的は近年統計学において著しく発展をとげている「ベイズ統計学」についてのコンファレンスを開催することであった。当初の計画どおりに1988年9月初旬、3日間の日程で箱根において「ベイズ統計学とその応用」と題するコンファレンスを開催した。参加者は全国の国公立・私立大学と研究所に所属する統計学の研究者であり約40名程に達した。コンファレンスの内容はベイズ統計学の基礎理論、統計分析への応用上の諸問題、経済・経営分析への応用上の諸問題に大きく分けることができるが発表された論文は準備期間が約1年間あったことも幸いして力作が多かった。コンファレンスでは各報告論文に対して1名ないし2名の討論者が割り当てられた。討論者には事前に論文草稿が配布されていたため適確なコメントが多く出され、一般討論とともにしばしば議論は白熱したものとなった。コンファレンスで報告された論文はその後、討論者の意見及び編集者(鈴木雪夫・国友直人)の意見を考慮して改稿された。その論文は近日中に「ベイズ統計学とその応用(仮題)」として東京大学出版会から書物として出版される予定である。これまで「ベイズ統計学」をテーマとしたコンファレンスはほとんどなかったようであり、ベイズ統計学の研究者が一同に会して論文を発表する機会もなかったようである。この意味でコンファレンスの開催とその成果としての書物は我が国の統計学の発展に寄与し得るものと確信する次第である。
