项目摘要

本研究の端緒は、日本のみに通用している〈原始仏教〉という呼称に対し、三枝が異議を唱えて、〈初期仏教〉の命名を提案した1970年代に遡る。その後、拙著『初期仏教の思想』(1978)にそれを論じ、同『ヴァスバンドゥ』(1983)には、インド仏教史を、初期・中期・後期と三分割する私案を公刊した。1986年の日本印度学仏教学会の学術大会ならびに学会誌35-1に、三枝は「インド仏教史の時代区分」を発表して、上掲の三分割を一部修訂して論述したさいに、「上の時代区分のいわば宗教哲学的根拠の一つとしてのブッダ観の変貌」を付言した。本研究はこの問題を最も詳細に探究した。その成果は1988年暮にまとめて、拙稿「インド仏教史の時代区分とブッダ観の展開」(『東洋学術研究』28-1、1989年2月)に掲載した。その要点は次のとおり。インド仏教史を、初期(釈尊から根本分裂ないしAsoka王までの150〜200年間)、中期(紀元320年にGupta王朝成立までの約550年間)、後期(13世紀初め仏教衰滅までの約900年間)と、三分割する。この三分割は、西洋哲学史やインド史などの三分割と通じ合う。そしてそれはまた、ブッダ観の展開とも符号する。すなわち、初期仏教には、仏の色身と法身との別が明瞭でなく、釈迦仏の俤が濃い。中期に、まず部派の繁栄があり、釈迦仏の理念(Idee)化が進み、やがて超人化・神格化が見られる。遅れて初期大乗が興ると、この理念は理想(Ideal)化され、また二身説の仏身論が確立する。後期仏教では、超越化=理想化の仏を一転して内在化させ、如来蔵・仏性思想が栄える(これは西洋哲学のカントからシュライエルマッハー以降の神観念の展開によく類似する)と同時に、三身説の仏身論が完成する。このようにして、インド仏教史の三分割が裏づけられる。
