项目摘要

大和鍛冶は奈良時代の中央集権の頃より存続していたはずであるが、この期の直刀から湾刀へ移り、荘園・武士の起りなと時代の推移に鍛冶がどのような状況にあったかという事は皆目判っていない。文献及び現存作品から大和鍛冶の存在が明らかとなるのは鎌倉時代後期である。これは大和五派と称される千手院、当麻、保昌、手掻、尻懸の各派であるのだが、その中で手掻派が美濃へ、別に千手院派が美濃赤坂へ移ったことは古くから伝えられているところであり、他に越中国宇多派が大和国宇陀郡から、薩摩国波平派、備後国国分寺助国など大和鍛冶の影響をうけたという旧説は肯定すべきところである。今回の研究で明らかとなったところは、大和にはこの五派以外にもいくつかの流派が存在したことであり、奥州鍛冶宝寿も大和鍛冶と直結するものであり、吉光と称する鍛冶で有名なものは京粟田口派の藤四郎吉光であり、これと銘振りの異なるものを土佐吉光、藤四郎吉光の偽物とみなされていたが、大和吉光を名乗る鍛冶が数代にわたって存在したことが確認され、文献から土佐吉光との関連が窺われるところである。また室町中期でほぼ手掻派が断え、代って金房派が出現するのであるが、金房派がとのようにして出現したか全く明らかにされていなかったものが、作品資料からある程度手掻派との関連が明らかとなった。また金房正真、勢州正真、三河文殊正真など正真を名乗る鍛冶が無縁でないことも今回の調査の成果であきらかとなったことである。結論として、旧説を覆すような大きな成果はなかったものの、こまかい空白を埋めるいくつかの成果を得たところである。
