1・円光寺(京都市左京区一乗寺)の現存する木製活字の調査・研究を行なった。その結果は『円光寺の文化財ー伏見版木製活字などー』(円光寺.1991年5月刊)の「円光寺木製活字とその付属品」(『円光寺所蔵伏見版木活字関係歴史資料調査報告書』[京都府教育委員会.1991年3月発行]の再録)の論文として発表した。これに引つづいて、本年度は円光寺現存木製活字(以下、円光寺活字と略称する)と、伏見版以外の活字版との関係について,研究を進め,これにより,円光寺活字のもつ近世初期の文化史上の意義が解明できることになった。円光寺活字と最も関係の深いものは徳川家康が駿河で出版を行なった駿河版(金属製活字を使用した活字版)との関係である。この金属製活字は鋳造活字であるので、鋳造するための字母を必要としたはずである。この字母は木製で、円光寺活字を彫造した慈眼・台林・半右衛門らによって製作されたものあると、私は推定する。2・諸種の古活字版を調査するに、東福寺版に円光寺活字を使用したのではないかと推測されるものが存する(例えば,『十九史略通考』)。また、片仮名活字はこれまで、伏見版に使用された例が発見されていないが、円光寺現存の片仮名活字は確かに使用されたと推測できることから、伏見版以外の活字版を製作した際に貸出されて使用されたことが考えられることになった。片仮名交りの『東鑑』などと考えあわせて、今後、更に調査・研究が行なわれねばならない。3・本研究によって、古活字版の出版者が、軍一の形態の活字のみならず、複数の形態の活字を所有していて、注文主に応じて,所在活字をさまざまに利用して、出版物を製作していたことが明瞭に把握できることになった。その一例は、円光寺活字の彫字工台林の出版活動である。彼が刊行した『課抄』はその具体的なものである。
