项目摘要

三菱の多角化について、従来の研究はコンツェルン化によって財閥となる明治後期・大正期に重点があった。しかし、三菱の場合、共同運輸と合併させられて「海から陸へ」と事業を大転換せざるを得ない1885年以前に、すでに種々多角化への布石を打っている。本研究は、これまで『三菱鉱業社史』(1976)、『高島炭砿史』(1989)執筆によって炭坑について、また、『日本の工業化と官業払下げ』(1977)執筆で金属鉱山や造船にも一部知見を得た筆者が、三菱総合研究所上野毛分室に残されている資料から、海運・金融をふくめ、多角化への意思決定を示す資料を収集して、企業と環境の視点からその全体像を提示しようとした。1.先ず、金属鉱山へ多角化する契機として吉岡鉱山買収(1873)に着目、来翰・指令等を見たが買収の理由は判然としない。しかし、川田小一郎、近藤廉平など三菱を支える人物が責任者となり、産銅は大阪へ荒銅のまま回送されていることは、官営大坂製練所の払受け、および佐渡・生野両鉱山の払受け(1896)を結果したと考えられる。古河が払受ける阿仁・院内両鉱山の「見込書」(1876)も三菱は入手していた。2.造船への多角化は、長崎造船局の借受け(1884)以前の横浜製鉄所(1875)が契機と拙著で示したが、海運三菱にとって船舶修理は重要で、迅速確実な外国に多く依存した。ところが、長崎・横須賀両造船局は三菱に修理を強要(1882)、これも長崎造船局放棄の遠因であろう。3.高島炭坑買収(1881)の意義は、経営史学会関東部会(1989・5.27)で報告したが、この年は「入社規則」整備の上で士族社員多数の採用など組織確立の年であり、高島獲得が、商事・金融・造船へ多角化する契機でもなることを、再確認できた。こうして、本年度前半はハンド・ライティング、後半はハ-ド・コピ-で資料を収集し、補助者1名を使い、整理・解読に精一杯で、地方での資料探索は不可能となった。
