E.デュルケムは彼の社会学体系の中に「社会形態学」を設定し、それを「社会学年報」において「その他部門」に位置づけたが、その重要性を認識してその学問的地位を高めたのは、第一次大戦後におけるM.モスである。即ち彼の創刊による「社会学年誌Annales sociologiques」の中で主要5部門の一つとしたのである。さらにこの「年誌」の編集に参画して「社会形態学・工学・美学部門」を担当してモスを助けたM.アルヴァクスは、自ら「社会形態学」の一書を公刊して厳密な意味での社会形態学を構想した。第二次大戦前の社会形態学はアルヴァクスによって体系化されたといえる。第二次大戦後、「社会学年報」第三シリーズにおいて「社会形態学部門」を担当したのはA.ジラールである。彼は「人口の科学」によって統計的に人間の全体を考察し、数量的側面から人間全体を支配する諸法則の究明に努力し、その見地から学校教育拡充、在学世代の構造、学校人口の分析による不適応生徒・学生、生徒指導と選択のメカニズム、学業失敗の問題、学校教育と経済的発展、学校教育と社会移動等の現実の教育問題の解明に取り組んでいる。フランスにおいては1961年に初めて「年報」に「教育社会学」部門が設定されたが、その内容は家庭教育、学校教育、教育史、青少年非行、社会階級等と広汎に亘り、必らずしも実証的研究に徹しているとはいえない。このような教育社会学の状況にあって教育事実の動態的実証的研究は、むしろ社会形態学=人口統計学が担当しており、教育の量的・質的関係の解明に大きく寄与している。社会集団の形態と構造の変化を社会集団自体が教育して形成する世論、態度・意識などによって自らを規制していく過程と見る立場は、今日の社会と教育との関係を考察する上で極めて示唆に富むものといえる。
