今年度実施した当該研究により、特に長崎の支配関係についての実証的研究を行い町方支配の実態の解明に向けて見通しを得ることができた。まず町年寄の関係史料を網羅的に収集し、整理することができた結果、江戸時代を通じて都市門閥的地位を維持した代官的豪商層の系譜を初めとする実態にアプローチすることが可能となった。即ちこれ迄長崎の支配については、対外関係(外交貿易)・九州監察・町方支配等のすべての面においてその権能は、長崎奉行が掌握したと考えられてきたが、特に江戸初期(17世紀)の時点においては、代官町年寄の実質的権限が大きく、将軍・幕府の貿易品購買への関与を含む外国貿易に対する裁量権、町方・寺社の訴訟受理などの点で広範な権能を保持していたことが、具体的に確かめられつつある。それらの権能は18世紀に入ると次第に長崎奉行所に吸収されてゆくが、その過程についても長崎代官末次平蔵の没落、貿易商法の改正等外国貿易に係わる環境の変化を契機としていることが、今回の研究によって明らかにされつつある。また貿易等に関与した実務者のリスト等も整理を進めつつあり、貿易都市長崎の解明に不可欠な基礎的資料の作成と町方の研究に展望を得た。なお長崎町乙名についても、各町ごとに乙名層の変遷と、長崎における重要な役割、個別乙名の実態究明に関する史料を収集し、研究をすすめている。当該研究は、近世幕藩体制下において特異な位置を占めた都市長崎支配に関わる問題であるので、法制に関する基礎史料の整備が先決であり、そのための諸準備をすすめているが、本研究の最初の成果として、近い将来長崎町年寄の関係史料を翻字出版する予定である。ついで重要な町方支配関係史料集の刊行や、都市長崎の新研究などを発表の予定である。
