项目摘要

まず、論文「最初の産業国家における建築と文化ヘゲモニー」(「史学研究」181号)において当該期の四大雑誌たるQuarterly Review、Blackwood's Magazine、Westminster Review、Edinburgh Reviewの建築関係の論文を分析し、以下の結論を得た。つまり、新しい産業社会が形成されつつあったヴィクトリア時代に出現したグリーク、ゴシック等の歴史的建築様式による建築群は、産業社会に相応しい新しい建築様式を創出し得なかった中産階級の文化的力量の弱さと過去の威信の強大さを示すというだけではなく、その歴史的様式は「近代の必要性」という十字架を背負っていたが故に、「新しき要素」と「古き要素」との和解というある種の閉塞的な枠組みの中からヴィクトリア時代の人々を満足させ得る建築作品を創出せんとする建築界の苦闘をも表していることを論証した。次に、「産業都市のイメージ」(研究論叢13巻1号)において、第一にマンチェスターはただ産業革命の中心地であったというだけではなく、美術展覧会などを積極的に開催し、ゴシック・リヴァイヴァルの一大中心地と目される文化都市でもあったこと、第二にこれらの文化諸活動は中産階級エリート層による自己自身の変容(社会的地位の上昇)とマンチェスターの文化イメージの変容を目的とする試みであったこと、第三にこれらの文化諸活動は支配エリートの労働者階級に対する社会的コントロールの手段でもあったこと、これらの諸点を論証し得た。本研究は、ヴィクトリア時代の文化史的特質を明らかにすることで、19世紀イギリス史の再検討を試みるものであるが、今後はヴィクトリア時代における二つの異郷への憧憬、つまり通時的異郷ー中世主義と空間的異郷ージャポニスムの意味を探ることにより研究を更に深めたいと考えている。
