黙示録の宗教的・文学的な背景に関する基礎的準備の段階として、まずヨハネ黙示録の原典を種々の研究書にあたりつつ読みこなすことが先決であったが、この目的はほぼ達成された。現在はピエテイスムスとのつながりをたどるために、ベンゲルの註解をもとにした語彙表をデータベース化しつつある。旧約の黙示録に関する研究はまだ着手できなかったので、今後の課題として残されている。ダンテの神曲は地獄篇で精一杯であったが、現代の黙示録的想像力につながる重要なテーマが次々と浮かび上がってきた。T・S・エリオットやアウアーバッハののダンテ理解をはじめとして、映画『地獄の黙示録』などに至るまで、その具体的な影響が指摘できる。現代文学を扱うのは当初の予定では第三段階(65年度)のつもりであったが、むしろ今のうちから折に触れて布石しておく方が、問題意識が絞られていくようだ。演劇だけでなく映画にも充分な注意を払う必要がある。今後の課題は、具体的な文学作品を選んで、黙示録的想像力がその作品全体にいかなる作用を及ぼしているかを観察していくことであり、バロック時代の作品を皮切りに、18世紀までの詩人を対象にしたい。ミヒャエル・エンデについての著書および論文において、黙示録的想像力に関する考察の一端を述べておいた。
