本年度の研究は以下のように実施された。1.18世紀啓蒙主義思想の研究の一環としてDavid Hume(1711-1776)の政治思想の解明をおこなった。そのさい政治論の中味である政府論、忠誠義務論、政党論などの分析に先だって、彼の政治論の思想的基盤である道徳哲学、とくに正義論の内容を検討した。彼は、一方では有徳な行為がおこなわれるには有徳な二つの動機(自然的動機と道徳的動機)が必要であるといいながら、他方で動機は道徳的動機だけでいいという。この相違がどこに起因するかを解明し、それがヒューム正義論解明の重要な手がかりであることを知った。2.さらにヒューム正義論について、彼の主張「正義は一種のコンヴェンション、すなわちアグリーメントによって樹立される」という意味を検討した。そして利己心をもつ人間が、社会的経験によって正義の必要を認識し、正義の法の樹立にむかうようになる心の内的誘因を、コンヴェンションと呼んでいることを確認した。その意味で正義の法は人間が社会的経験から生みだす人為的な法なのである。3.18世紀前半のイギリス政治史について、とくにウォールポール時代の政治に注目し、公債問題など南海泡沫事件をめぐるヒュームの見解、ウォールポール政治にたいする評価、それらを扱うときのヒュームの政治哲学を検討した。このテーマはヒュームの歴史論とも密接に関連することが判明した。4.ヒュームの歴史書『イングランド史』の各版対照は、初版とくに最初『グレイト・ブリテン史』という題名で出版された部分の第一巻について、その後の版との比較を重視した。作業は進行中で完了までには相当の時間が必要である。
