1970年以降のキャトルサイクルについて、和牛めすと畜頭数によると、と畜頭数が減少する3年、と畜頭数の増加する4年の7年周期(と畜頭数のピーク、1971、1978、1985、と畜頭数のボトム、1974、1981、)で変動している。めすと畜頭数が減少するとき子牛価格は騰貴しており、逆に、めすと畜頭数が増加するとき子牛価格は下落するという関係が理論的には成立する。そこで、子牛価格の周期をみると、子牛価格のボトム間は1970〜1975、1975〜1984と周期は不規則であるが、子牛価格のピーク間は1973〜1980年間の7年周期となっている。めすと畜頭数の規則的な周期と子牛価格の周期が一致しないのは(1)めす子牛価格のボトムから価格が上昇過程にはいったときの子牛価格の上昇率の大きさ、(2)めすと畜頭数が減少過程にはいったときのと畜頭数の減少率の大きさの二つの要因に規定されるからである。キャトルサイクルによると、めすと畜頭数のボトムは1988年になる筈であるが、ボトムの1年前に子牛価格はピークに達するのが通例であり、しかし、子牛価格はボトムになる筈の1988年も上昇過程にあるから、と畜頭数のボトムは1988年にはならない。それは、子牛価格の上昇率に対して、めすと畜頭数の減少率が相対的に小さいからである。即ち、子牛価格の下落要因となる繁殖牛飼養頭数の増加率が緩慢であるからである。それは和牛生産構造の高齢化に規因している。子牛価格の下落期間はめす子牛価格より去勢子牛価格の方が短く、相対価格では、めす子牛価格が去勢子牛価格より高騰する期間が長い。しかし、58年以降は去勢子牛価格がめす子牛価格より常に高騰している。これは、牛肉卸売価格の異常高騰による。めす子牛価格が子牛価格動向を規定していた1970年代までは、ブリーダー的家畜市場が中心的役割を果したが、1980年代にはいって家畜市場の平準化が進んでいる。
