Scintillation Fiber Calorimeter (SFCAL) is a calorimeter which has attracted interests as one of the detectors to be developed for high energy physics experiments in the coming years, especially at the multi-TeV hadron colliders such as SSC or LHC. We have been developing plastic scintillation fibers and a readout system of fiber calorimeter. A calorimeter module which we have been studying is 2.3 m long made of 1mm PHI scintillation fibers and lead. The proportion of scintillation fiber and lead is 1 to 4 in volume. The cross sections of the front and rear ends of the module are 4 x 4 cm and 8 X 8 cm. Protruding fibers at the rear end are bundled keeping the order of fibers in the lead. Bundled fibers are mirror-polished and connected to a multi-anode photomultiplier (MAPMT), Hamamatsu H4484. This MAPMT has 64 anodes and it makes it possible for us to study the features of the shower development in the material. It weighs about 900Kg in total.Before studying this module for the high energy beam at CERN, we made a preliminary test of it on a few GeV electron beams produced at the TRISTAN Accumulation Ring for the following items.1) Treatment of output pulses with FADC2) Energy dependence of output signal3) Spread of shower in the module at its energy dependence4) Attenuation of the scintillation light in the module5) Interference of output pulse among the anodes6) Energy leakage between calorimeter modules7) Dependence of output pulse on the mechanical stress to the module8) Dependence of the output pulse on the incident beam angle9) Long term stability of the output pulseThe results are currently analyzed carefully. We confirmed that the light attenuation in the module depends critically on the glue used to assemble fibers and lead. It was first found by the collaborator at CERN.
