アイヌ民族の冬,雪,寒さに関する文化に視点を置き,各地の博物館等に残存する雪上歩行具,除雪具,衣服等の有形民族資料を通し,アイヌ民族がどの様な文化的特色を継承してきたか,日本文化,北方諸民族の文化と比較しながら調査を進めた。その結果以下の事が明確となった。1.アイヌ民族が使用する雪上歩行具(カンジキ)には単輪型,複輪型の2タイプがあり,前者は岩手県北部に分布するものと同一であり,後者は北海道に分布するものと同一であった。両者とも樺太,シベリヤ,アラスカに分布するラケット状カンジキとは明確に異なるものであった。また,樺太,シベリヤ地方に分布する橇,スキ-がアイヌ民族にみられなかった。従って,アイヌ民族の雪上歩行員,運搬具は,日本文化の影響を強く受けたものであると考えられる。2.アイヌ民族に若干の除雪具があった事を確認したが,伝統的に継承し,普及していたものとは考えられず,日本にみられる除雪具(コスキ)の影響がなかった思われる。この点に関しては,樺太,シベリヤ地方の諸民族が除雪具を有しない事と同様であった。3.アイヌ民族の衣服,特に冬期間着用する衣服は,北方諸民族が毛皮中心であるのに対し,毛皮製衣服を着用する事例が少なく,夏,冬とも日本文化の影響を受けた単衣形式の布,樹皮製衣服であり,防寒性を考慮した衣服ではないものと考えられる。しかし,この点に関しては近世を中心とする毛皮交易を背景に考えなければならないであろう。これらの結果は、残存する有形民族資料,文献等から江戸時代後期には成立していたものと考えられ,当時の社会背景からみても日本文化の影響を強く受けていたものと思われる。しかし,日本文化と必ずしも同一ではなく,また,北方諸民族の冬期生活資料とも極めて異なる点にアイヌ民族の特異的文化が成立していたものと推察される。
