積雪地帯における伝統的有形民俗資料の比較研究調査は, カンジキと除雪具を対象に青森県, 岩手県, 福島県, 秋田県, 山形県, 富山県, 石川県, 福井県, 長野県, 北海道を中心に調査を行った.カンジキは, いわゆる竹を曲げた単輪型が本州における共通した形態であった. 中でも新潟県山間部, 北陸地方を中心に分布するスカリとその類似型は最も大型のカンジキであり, スカリの上にさらに小型のカンジキをはくといった重複型は, 豪雪地帯における最も大きな特色であった.これに対し, 北海道では前輪と後輪で構成するいわゆる複輪型のカンジキが主流であった. また, 新潟県山間部から移住した人々の場合も, 単輪型のカンジキよりも複輪型カンジキを使用している. このことは, 両地域における雪質の相異が最も大きな要因と考えられる.北海道アイヌが使用したヒョウタン型カンジキは, 岩手県北部, 青森県南部にも分布していた. しかし, この関連性については, 今回の調査でも解明できなかった. また, 八戸市是川遺跡出土のカンジキは, カンジキであるかどうかが問題であり, これらの問題を解明するてがかりにはならなかった. 本州における除雪具は, 一枚板で製作する雪ベラ, コスキ(木鋤)が主流であった. 柄が2m前後ある長いものは, 岩手県から北陸地方の山間部にみられ, 屋根の雪おろしに使用するものであった. また, 日本海沿岸部, 山間部の雪ベラは, ブナ材を使用することも大きな特色であった.これに対し, 北海道では, 箱型状の雪ベラが主流であった. また, 1枚板のコスキを使用していた人々も移住後は箱状の除雪具を使用している. これらの要因もやはり雪質の相異によるものと考えられる.
