1.京都に出店を持ち、生糸や輸入綿布・毛織物を商う、近江の旅商人小杉屋元蔵(現五個荘町出身)の記した、「見聞日録」および「見聞集」・「続見聞集」を出身地や全国の取引先を中心にフィ-ルドワ-クを交えて、徹底的に読みこなした。2.運出入品の商いを通じて19世紀後半の世界に触れた小杉屋元蔵が見聞きしたものを体系的に整理しながら、幕末・組新期をどう見すえ、どのような歴史認識を持つに至ったかを、克明に追求した。3.その成果を拙著『近江商人 幕末・維新見聞録』として刊行できたが、それに関連して、幕末・維新期の庶民日記の所在を調査し、歴史研究者のみならず、文化人類学者や国語・国文学者などとも交流を深めた。4.京都・名古屋・東京・新潟の研究者とともに、「見聞日録」翻刻出版を目指して、具体的な作業に着手している。5.本研究の成果と課題については、前掲拙著「あとがき」にやや詳しく記したが、その要点は次のとおりである。(1)近世庶民の自然観、死生観、さまざまな意識、倫理感、信仰など、内面的世界を生き生きととらえることができた。(2)幕末・維新期の近江商人ひいては日本の商人の有りようを、輸出入品の商いを通じて具体的に明らかにしえた。(3)幕末・維新期の京都町人の暮らし、なかでも、家屋敷の売買、町衆となる日の振舞い、町役、社寺参詣や諸興行などへの関心を具体的に明らかにするとともに、天皇や朝延への期待感、攘夷主義への傾斜と反発など、時勢とのかかわりについても追求した。(4)戦乱と平和をめぐる商人たちの意識、とりわけ「戊辰戦爭」観を明らかにしえたこと、また「文明開化」への対応を商売と意識の両面からとらえたこと、この二つは、本研究の最も大きな成果である。
