昭和63年度科学研究費補助金一般研究C(課題番号63510225)による、熊本県水俣市北園遺跡の発掘調査成果は、人骨の発見など多大な成果を上げた。この成果をまとめる基礎作業は、墳墓、副葬遺物、人骨と多枝に渡り、2年を要してようやく報告書を刊行できるまでに到った。平成2年度科学研究費補助金一般研究C(課題番号02610189)の交付が、きわめて大きな支えとなった。まず、鹿児島県吉松町永山遺跡の出土資料の調査により、地下式板石積石室墓の年代の一点を知りえた。今後は、関係深い成川式土器の編年的研究を、更に進める必要があろう。八代海南部以南の古墳の踏査、資料の調査、および古墳の発掘調査への参加等で、重要な成果を上げることができた。最大の成果は、地下式板石積石室墓が消滅すると考えられる5世紀の中頃は、八代海より以南から薩摩半島にかけての地域に古墳がないこと、八代海以南に最大の影響力のある宇土半島の前方後円墳も築造されず、これらの動きが連動している可能性が高いこと。この大変動は、5世紀中頃に越ると考えられることから、継本朝の成立という、古墳時代の日本的規模の大変動に関係していることをも考慮せねばならない。地下式板石積石室墓を初めとした南部九州の古墳文化の研究は、南部九州という辺境の地という視野は最早捨て去らねばならず、日本全体の古墳文化の中で考えねばならないことが、より明らかになりつつあるといえる。
