南部九州における古墳文化の課題の中で、今回は主に地下式板石積石室墓を研究対象とした。(1)南部九州の地下式横穴墓、地下式板石積石室墓、土拡墓に関する文献を収集し、遺跡地名表をまとめた。(2)球麿川以南の八代海の古墳の発見に務め、既知の古墳の再検討を行い、多くの新知見を得た。(3)保存されている地下式板石積石室墓の観察、写真撮影と計測を行った。(4)地下式板石積石室墓に関する重要な土器については、発掘調査が長期化したため、実現できなかった。(5)熊本県水俣市北園古墳群の一画で、残存する地下式板石積石室墓の石材数ヶ所分を抜き取るということを聞き、発掘調査を行うことにした。発掘した100m^2足らずの中から、地下式板石積石室墓5基などを発見し、内1号と2号の2基は、板石積の下部から石室が残っていた。内1号からは、埋葬された状態がわかる程度に人骨が並んで発見された。成人骨7体と幼・小児骨1体が伸展葬で並んで発見された。同積墳墓では初めての発見であり、これまで疑問であった点の多くを、解明することができた。さらに、副葬された矢の鉄鏃のあり方から、古墳の埋葬方法と同様であろうと考えられ、きわめて強く古墳文化の影響を受けていることがわかった。多くの遺体を追葬する必要から、箱式石棺と同規模の長方形から、最小の直径で最大の面積を得るため、円形に変化したものであろうとの、変化の理由を初めて考え得るに到った。人骨の整理研究が期待した成果を得れば、この墳墓が家族墓か否かを知りえようし、家族墓であれば、さらに問題が大きくなり、古墳時代の研究に画期的な寄与をすることも考えられる。きわめて重要な発掘調査成果であり、早急に報告書をまとめたい。その上で、さらに地下式板石積石室墓とその時代について、研究を進めたい。特に初期の墳墓の発掘調査と研究は、緊急の課題である。
