当研究者はフォ-クナ-の『寓話』とピンチョンの『重力の虹』において,個人と集団の間にどのような権力構造が存在し、それがどのような機能を果たしているかという問題と、現代の文学批評理論における大きな問題である作者と作品と読者の関係にひそむ権力構造の問題がこれらの作品においてどのように現われているかという問題を研究した。その結果次のことが明らかになった。まず個人と集団の間の権力構造であるが,両作品とも戦争を舞台としている。戦争とは敵と味方の区別が単純な形で示される状況であり、軍隊という強固にして絶対的ヒエラルキ-体制が権力を掌握する状況である。しかし両作品が示す重要な対立関係は敵と味方の間に存在するのではない。『寓話』における真の対立関係は味方の軍隊の上下関係にこそ存在する、即ち兵士の敵は戦闘の相手ではなく自分の上官なのである。『重力の虹』においても同様に、ヒエラルキ-の上層部の「エリ-ト」と下層部の「クズ」の間に真の権力関係が存在する。『重力の虹』においては更に、「システム」と「ゾ-ン」そしてその中間といった多様な要素が権力関係を成立させ、『寓話』より一層構造が複雑にからみあっている。このような権力関係は作者と読者の間にも存在する。両作品において作者はもはや書く存在としての絶対性を維持しているとはいえない。ナラティブを機能させるのは作中の「読む者」の役割を担う人物であり、しかもこの人物もテクストの不確実性の中にのみこまれる。「書く者」の権力は消滅に向い、読者の権力が拡大する。こうした権力関係の背景には『重力の虹』に示されたようにピュ-リタニズムの存在が予想される。今後は平成三年度研究課題として申請したように、19世紀のメルヴィル化にさかのぼってこの研究をすすめたい。
