Biological Processes in the Arctic Polynya Areas

本研究的重点是北半球季节性冰盖海域的生物过程，即(1)白令海的圣劳伦斯岛波利尼亚(St Lawrence Island Polynya)，(2)日本北海道的Saroma-Ko泻湖，(3)加拿大北极的Resolte Passage和(4)Spitzbergen地区。该计划涉及多学科，涵盖以下领域：(I)海洋学、海冰和气象学的物理过程，(Ii)冰藻初级生产和浮游植物生产及其生物、物理和化学过程，(Iii)生态系统中的次生生产及其营养动态环节，(Iv)冰藻的生化适应性，以及(V)地球化学循环过程。日本、美国、加拿大和挪威科学家在上述四个领域的联合野外工作非常成功，科学成果将作为专册发表在《海洋系统杂志》上。

The present research program focuses on the biological processes in the seasonal ice-covered sea areas in the northern hemisphere, namely (1) St Lawrence Island polynya in Bering Sea, (2) Saroma-Ko lagoon in Hokkaido, Japan, (3) Resolute Passage in the Canadian arctic, and (4) Spitzbergen area. The program is quite multi- disciplinary and covers the following fields ; (i)physical processes of oceanography, sea ice and meteorology, (ii)ice algae primary production and phytoplankton production and their biological, physical and chemical processes, (iii)secondary production and its tropho-dynamic links in the ecosystem, (iv)biochemical adaptability of ice algae, and (v)geochemical cycling processes.The joint field works among Japanese, US, Canadian and Norwegian scientists in the above four areas were very successful and the scientific results will be published in the "Journal of Marine Systems" as a special volume.
