The present research program focuses on the biological processes in the seasonal ice-covered sea areas in the northern hemisphere, namely (1) St Lawrence Island polynya in Bering Sea, (2) Saroma-Ko lagoon in Hokkaido, Japan, (3) Resolute Passage in the Canadian arctic, and (4) Spitzbergen area. The program is quite multi- disciplinary and covers the following fields ; (i)physical processes of oceanography, sea ice and meteorology, (ii)ice algae primary production and phytoplankton production and their biological, physical and chemical processes, (iii)secondary production and its tropho-dynamic links in the ecosystem, (iv)biochemical adaptability of ice algae, and (v)geochemical cycling processes.The joint field works among Japanese, US, Canadian and Norwegian scientists in the above four areas were very successful and the scientific results will be published in the "Journal of Marine Systems" as a special volume.

本研究计划的重点是北方半球季节性冰覆盖海域的生物过程，即（1）白令海的圣劳伦斯岛冰间湖，（2）日本北海道的Saroma-Ko泻湖，（3）加拿大北极的Resolute海峡，（4）Spitzbergen地区。该计划是相当多学科，并涵盖以下领域;（i）海洋学、海冰和气象学的物理过程;（ii）冰藻初级生产力和浮游植物生产力及其生物、物理和化学过程;（iii）次级生产力及其在生态系统中的营养动力学联系;（iv）冰藻的生物化学适应性;（v）地球化学循环过程。美国、加拿大和挪威的科学家在上述四个领域取得了非常成功的成果，科学成果将作为特刊发表在《海洋系统杂志》上。
