The Purpose of this study is to examine whether there exists any effect of alteration in occlusal condition on the body balance. First, the effect of occlusal support with and without prosthetic appliance in edetulous patients was examined. Second, the effect of acute periodontal pain derived by placing orthodontic separating elastics was investigated in human subjects with normal occlusion.Body balance adjustment capability was evaluated by means of computerized dynamic posturography. 1) Sensory Organization Test : Somatosensory and visual environments were altered systematically by the system, and the subject responses were recorded. During this test, force plate and/or visual environment may sway so that they move to follow the patient's anteroposterior sway movements(sway-referencing system). Sway-referencing system delivers inaccurate orientation information to the eye, feet and joints and inner ear to cancel the reference. 2) Motor Control Test : A series of force plate movement elicits automatic postural responses. This test includes the symmetry of weight bearing, the reaction speed(latency), the strength and symmetry of response.In edentulous patients, the capability of maintaining equilibrium about Sensory Organization Test increased when they were tested with complete dentures. This indicates contribution of occlusal support with prosthetic appliance to maintain sensory organization function in edentulous patients. Dynamic equilibrium function did not change after inducing periodontal pain by separating elastics.
