1920年頃、アメリカ合衆国の日系移民は,二世を日本のことも理解できる良きアメリカ市民になるように教育するため日本語教科書を作成し、使用した。かれらは、日本の文部省の承認を得て、日本の第4期国定国語教科書(サクラ読本)を英訳し、使用した。訳本の底本となったサクラ読本の中に、中近東の民話が取り上げられている。「逃げたらくだ」というタイトルである。これは、当当時の英語読本(岡倉由三郎著)にあった題材を日本語に翻訳、翻案したものである。米国在住日系二世用の日本語教科書を作成するに当って、この題材も他のものと同時に英訳されており、英語から日本語、さらに日本語から英語の二回の翻訳を経ている。この過程で,題材は、表現や用語の使い方などが少しずつ変化している。「逃げたらくだ」の由来は大変に古く、14世紀初めにインドの詩人(Amir Khusrau)が創作した叙事詩“Hasht bihisht(Eight Paradises)"であり,16世紀にこの詩のイタリア語版(翻案版)がベニスの出版社から出版され、初めてヨ-ロッパに紹介された。この詩のフランス語版を読んだ英国のH.Walpoleは、Serendipityという語(捜してもいない良いものを偶然に発見する才能という意味)を造った。英文読本、サクラ読本(巻五)、日系二世世教科書の中の「逃げたらくだ」の本文の全文のテキストをイメ-ジスキャナを用いて読み取り、パ-ソナルコンピュ-タ用デ-タファイルとして作成した。
