幕末維新期から近代を通じて、農村経済の進展度のうえで、福井・石川・富山3県の北陸地方が、いわゆる「中間型」地域に包摂されるが、そのほかに真宗腸帶としての地域性が、北陸地方近代化のなかで、どのような働きをみせるかとの課題意識をふまえ、特に明治後期から大正期にかけての機業生産の飛躍的な発展について、種々調査研究を行った。このさい真宗教義の「職業労働」尊重の「職業倫理」が、機業経営者と機業労働者(女工)の双方に、どのような教育力を発揮するかという分析視角から、特に真宗寺院僧侶の機業場訪問による「工場説教」の実態を検討した。地方資料(特に機業経営資料)・中央資料(国立国会図書館・農林水産省図書館・東京大学経済学部図書館所蔵)調査のほかに、3県内の明治後期創業の機業場の関係者や地区真宗寺院僧侶からの聞き取り調査を実施した。たとえば、石川県下で機業の盛んな河北郡七塚村木津(現、七塚町)は、真宗寺院(大谷派)一色の真宗地帶であるが、当地の代表的な寺島機業場[明治32年創業]の場合、現社長寺島光与氏によると、大正・昭和戦前期には、同機業場の女工に対して、金沢別院の僧侶に依頼し、毎月1回「工場説教」を行ったという。また当地の正楽寺(大谷派)は、地区の高橋機業場の「女工一同寄贈」と記した幔幕を所蔵するが、同寺の住職星名隆によると、明治後期にさかのぼり、同機業場女工への「工場説教」がしばしば行われる。いっぽう富山県中新川郡も名実ともの真宗地帯で、同郡上市町の細川機業場(明治24年創業)では、かつては女工を中心に女子青年団を設け、真宗寺伝僧侶を招いて宗教教育を実施した。この点、非真宗地帶で明治後期から機業生産が衰退する群馬・栃木両県の動向との比較により、北陸真宗地帶の地域性が一層明確化するが、さらに他の山形・福島など機業諸県との比較研究の必要性が痛感される。
