この研究では各地の遺跡から報告されている古代の漆付着土器を報告書や現地調査から集成するとともに、正倉院文書や延喜式などの文献史料に記載された漆関係の記事を抽出し、カ-ド化、分析を行った。漆付着土器は従来から、漆の貯蔵容器、漆使用時のパレット、漆塗りの土器に分類されていた。今回漆の貯蔵容器をさらに分析したところ、貯蔵容器は、東北地方を除いて原則的に須恵器であること。器形は平瓶、長頸瓶などがあるが、そのような器名呼称では律し難い器形もあり、漆貯蔵容器はむしろ栓をしやすくするために頸部を細く作る点に特徴のある「細頸壺」と総称すべきであること。「細頸壺」の中には、当時使用されていた食器とは全く異質な器形が含まれており、これらは漆貯蔵専用容器として生産された可能性が高く、その生産は7世紀前半には始まっていたことなどが判明した。現在も漆貯蔵専用容器である「細頸壺」の生産地を確定するために、各地の須恵器窯出土土器の分析を行っている。一方、漆付着土器出土遺跡の分析からは、次のような成果、手懸りを得た。一般集落からの出土例は少なく、都城・地方宮衛・寺院などの公的施設からの出土例が多い。このことは税として貢納された漆の再配分の実態を反映していること。藤原宮から平安宮に至る都城・地方官衛・寺院などの中枢部からの出土例が少なく、むしろ、それらの遺跡の周辺部からの出土が目立つことから、各遺跡での漆工房の位置を推定できるようになったこと。この点は単に漆工房のみならず、他の生産工房の位置を知る手懸りになるものと考えられる。今後、漆付着土器、特に貯蔵容器の分析を通して、漆の貢納、貯蔵の問題に止まらず、さらに、須恵器の生産・貢納との問題と関連させて、この研究を展開していきたい。
