1.平成4年度においてはとくに、冷戦の終結とソ連の解体及び湾岸戦争が中東紛争の構造に及ぼしたインパクトの分析に重点を置いた。とりわけ冷戦の終結とソ連の解体に関しては、(1)従来、対ソ戦略上の観点からイスラエルの戦略的価値に重きを置いていた米国の中東政策の転換と米イスラエル関係の変化、(2)従来、旧ソ連から政治的・軍事的支援を受けていたアラブ対決諸国及びPLOに及ぼした影響、(3)旧ソ連からの大量のユダヤ人移住者の流入がイスラエル社会に及ぼした影響、(4)それに伴う入植地建設の増大が西岸・ガザ地区のパレスチナ人社会に与えた影響などをイスラエル、米国、アラブ諸国及びパレスチナの文献によって把握に努めた。2.また湾岸戦争に関しては、(1)イラクからのスカッド・ミサイルの攻撃にさらされたイスラエル政府及び市民の安全保障観の変化、(2)イラクのサダム政権に支持を寄せた西岸・ガザ住民の挫折感とそれがインティファーダに及ぼした影響、(3)いわゆるリンケージ論がパレスチナ問題に与えた国際的影響、(4)湾岸産油諸国、とくにクウェートのパレスチナ問題に対する支持の低下及びパレスチナ人追放がインティファーダに与えた影響などの把握に努めた。3.さらに湾岸戦争後に開始された中東和平国際会議は、いわゆる占領地住民の自治による解決策を浮上させることになったが、(1)これがイスラエル社会に与えた影響、とくにリクード政権から労働党政権への交代の背景、(2)それが西岸・ガザ住民に与えた期待と幻滅感、(3)自治に期待を寄せるPLO支持勢力と占領地イスラム過激派勢力との分裂、(4)イスラム勢力ハマースの過激なテロ行為によるインティファーダの変質、(5)それに対するイスラエル政府の過剰な反応が中東和平交渉に及ぼしつつある影響などの分析に努めた。
