项目摘要

本年度の研究の主目的は、幕末大島高任によって指導された洋式木炭高炉が比較的順調に出銑をみたのに対し、30年後横山久太郎によって試みられた再建小高炉が出銑に難渋したのは何故かをさぐることにあった。そのため幕末高炉については「南部家文書」「鈴木家文書」等を詳細に調査し、横山高炉については「公文録」(国立公文書館)「横山久太郎殿下功績録」等にくわしくあたった。その結果、幕末大島高炉が、南部「たたら金山」の「たたら大工」をはじめ、成熟した「同職集団」に組織された熟造した職人層に依拠し、その知恵と工夫を最大限に生かしてしたのに対し、再建横山高炉は、「釜どけし」とよばれる近在漁民出身のある種の潟浪民にしか依存できていなかったことが明らかになり、それが明暗の重要な要因であることが確認できた。このことは旧来の「資本の原始的蓄積」論に、重要な問題提起を行うものでもある。つまり近代産業の「離陸(ティクオフ)」にとっては、いわゆる「二重の意味で自由な労働者」のみでは決して充分とはいえず、成熟した「同職集団」の動員が、決定的なカギであったことを、示しているからである。筆者はすでにかかる論旨を中心に、別掲「初期製鉄業と職工社会」を発表している。今後の課題としては、一端成立した幕末大島高炉が、南部「たたら金山」の衰退と共に、何故に急速に閉鎖的地縁社会へと閉塞としてったかの究明が重要になろう。そのために未使用の史料である「釜石鉱山書上」(岩手県立図書館蔵)「釜石鉱山諸用留」(盛岡中央図書館)などを共に、特に明治初期の釜石鉱山の分析を続けたい。
