佐賀県神埼郡神埼町と三田川町にまたがる吉野ケ里遺跡の甕棺などから弥生時代人骨が出土した。この遺跡は考古学的調査で、この地域の拠点的集落であった可能性が指摘されており、人類学的価値も大きいものと考えられる。出土人骨や歯の人類学的観察と計測を行ない、以下の結果を得た。1.出土人骨は355体で、時期的には弥生時代の中期から後期にかけての人骨である。2.保存状態がよく、研究に使用できたのは全体の1/3程度である。3.頭型は中頭型に属し、この地域から従来出土している甕棺弥生人と大差ない。4.顔面には高顔傾向が認められ、下顎骨は頑丈で、顔面は屈強である。5.風習的抜歯は認められない。6.四肢骨は長く、また、下肢骨は特に頑丈である。7.推定身長は高く、高身長である。8.男女とも上記の特徴が同じように認められ、志波屋六本松乙遺跡で認められた男女間の違いは吉野ケ里遺跡では認められない。吉野ケ里遺跡では環壕で囲まれた墳丘墓からも甕棺が出土したことから、墳丘墓の人骨とそうでない列埋葬からの出土人骨との間に違いが認められるかどうかも興味ある課題であったが、墳丘墓から出土した人骨の保存状態は著しく悪く、その特徴を明らかにすることはできなかった。北部九州の弥生人集団の形質的特徴を検討してみると、「高顔・高身長」という共通した特徴を示してはいるが、遺跡間ごとに異なる特徴も存在することが次第にはっきりしてきた。二塚山弥生人と三津永田弥生人はともに屈強で、顔の幅も広い。四肢骨もかなり頑丈であるが、志波屋六本松乙弥生人や横隈狐塚弥生人は顔の幅が狭く「高・狭顔」といってよい。吉野ケ里弥生人は両者の中間的位置を示しているが、どちらかといえば前者に近いようである。今後はこの遺跡間ごとの検討と時代的な差を考慮した検討分析を行なっていく必要がある。
