项目摘要

わが国における神仏習合には根深いものがあるが、その建築の多くは中世末期の兵乱と、明治継新の神仏分離で完膚なきまでに破却された。そのためか、建築史の分野では神社建築と仏教建築が別個なものとして語られてきた。本研究では主として神社側での神仏習合の事象を中心としながら、山岳寺院側での問題についても限られたものであるが検討を加えた。その概略の結論は以下に示す通りである。(1)初期神宮寺では塔を多く建立する例が認められ、就中、宇佐へ幡神宮寺(弥勤寺)・住吉大社神宮寺などでは、薬師寺式の伽盞配置をとり、ともに南面する。こゝで注目されるのは神社と神宮寺の配置計画で、前者では両者ともに南面、後者では神社は海に向うように西面し、第一殿の北方に本堂があって南面する。(2)配置計画(神宮寺と神社)をみると、一走したものはないが古代の信仰の軸線、社殿祭祀となってからの軸線に、神宮寺の伽盞の軸線が加えられたものと推定される。いずれにしても両者の軸線は直交するものが多くなってくるように考えられる。(3)山岳寺院は地主神をとり込む形式で成立したものと考えられるが、その中心堂宇となるのは「講堂」であったとみられ、それは院坊の中心堂宇としての意味のもつと考えられる。神社の勢力の強いところではその軸線と直交するように配され、寺院の勢力が強ければ中軸線上に建つとみられる。時代が降ると拝殿の様相をもつ例がある。(4)神仏習合過程で仏堂の本殿に与えた影響として、従来指定されている双堂(屋)形式のものの他に「宮巡」を行う有心平面の本殿があり、そこでの神仏習合化には著しいものがある。(5)神社で多数の仏教建築がたつが、その様式についても興味深い点があり、禅宮寺本堂が神宗様仏殿の形態をとるものがある。
