1992年4月のBISと中央銀行による外国為替市場の調査と、井上のヒヤリング調査にもとづいてD.マルクが1980年代後半為替媒介通貨(vehicle currency)機能でドルと交替していることが明らかにされた。EMSの外国為替制度であるERMをベースに直物取引ではオランダギルダー、スウェーデンクローナなどに対してD.マルクはドルより著しく大きなシェアを示している。金融取引の性格をもった先物、フューチャーではまだD.マルクよりドルに対する取引高が大きい。そしてEMS内で為替媒介通貨であるD.マルクに対してはEMS外のドル、円との為替取引が大きくなってきている。深町、島崎、片岡、大矢、井上、前田が研究業績を発表している。1970年代の変動相場制のもとでは、D.マルクをはじめとしてEC各国の通貨は、自国通貨を契約通貨(invoicing currency)に用いることによって、ドルから他の通貨に移り、多様化していった。契約通貨の多様化をドルの第1「衰退」とよぶとすれば、80年代後半の為替媒介通貨におけるドルからD.マルクへの交替は第2の「侵食」ということができる。そこで、ドルの為替媒介通貨機能の後退と関連してこの機能が銀行間為替市場における決済通貨、また外国為替市場における介入通貨(intervention currency)とどう関連するか検討された。深町、島崎、井上の業績で論じられている。さらにこの研究では1920年代と今日の基軸通貨の詳細な検討を平岡が行い、管理通貨と国内信用システムの変貌を坂本、川波、数阪、片桐が分析した。ECの通貨統合で島崎、またアジアにおける円の位置づけと国際金融にかんして井上、蔡がすでに詳細な分析を行っている。三極通貨体制の具体的検討、D.マルクに著しく遅れている円の国際通貨化の分析が続けて行われる予定である。
