貝殻・沈線紋土器が注目されるようになったのは、1930年代のことである。神奈川県三戸遺跡や田戸遺跡、あるいは北海道住吉町遺跡から出土したこの種の尖底土器は、最古の縄紋土器の一群に位置づけられるとともに縄紋文化の起源を究明する土器として、研究が進められてきた。しかし、戦後の撚色紋土器や押型紋土器の編年研究がめざましい成果をあげる中で、貝殻・沈線紋土器の研究は、資料的な制約と相候って、停滞的であったといっても過言ではない。1964年、岩手県蛇王洞洞穴の発掘以降、東北地方の貝殻・沈線紋土器と関東地方の三戸式・田戸式土器との比較研究がなされるようになり、その出自が問題となっている。関東起源説と東北起源説が対立した見解が提示され、今だ解決していない。近年の発掘資料の増加にともない、特に東北と関東をつなぐ福島県・茨城県からも良好な資料(前原遺跡・竹之内遺跡など)が出土し、その成立に関する方向性が見通せるようになってきた。1、貝殻・沈線紋土器の地名表・分布図を製作した。2、貝殻・沈線紋土器の文献を収集し、目録とその拓本をカード化した。3、紋様を施紋具別に分類し、紋様帯の基本類型をつくった。4、東北地方の貝殻・沈線紋土器の成立の前段階の日計式土器の検討を行った。5、三戸式・田戸式土器と中西以西に分布する押型紋土器との共伴関係を検討する。
