项目摘要

1920年ごろ,アメリカ合衆国の日系移民は,二世を日本のことも理解できる良きアメリカ市民になるように教育するため,日本語でなく,英文及びローマ字による日本語教科書を作成し使用した。かれらは,日本の文部省の承認を得て,日本の国定教科書(第4期サクラ読本)を英訳し,見開きのページの中にローマ字と日本語原文を添えて相互に参照できる教科書を作り使用した。英訳本の底本となったサクラ読本の中に,中近東の民話「逃げたラクダ」が取り上げられている。これは,当時,英米の英語読本にあった題材を日本語に翻訳,翻案したものである。また,イソップ寓話集その他の西欧の童話等も数多く取り入れられている。この米国在住日系二世用の日本語教科書を作成するに当って,これらの題材も他のものと同様に英訳されており,英語から日本語,更に日本語から英語の2回の翻訳を経ている。この過程で,題材は,表現や用語の使い方などが少しずつ変化している。二度の翻訳・翻案を経たこの教材が,内容や表現などに具体的にどのような変容を遂げたのかを,逐語的に比較検討し,翻訳の差(変化,揺れ)と当時の社会的背景や日系二世に対する日本の教育団体の姿勢などを明らかにし,異文化理解における問題点とその解決策を考察するため,国定教科書(サクラ読本)の「逃げたラクダ」の文章を,そのままパソコンのデータとして取り込み,もとの英語読本にあった文章と,英訳国語読本の該当箇所も同様にパソコンのデータとして取り込み全文テキストデータベースを試作した。読取装置は,市販のパソコンと画像読取装置(イメージスキャナ)及び画像データ読取ソフトを組み合わせて構成したシステムである。読取ソフトの性能は,学習効果により向上するため,各教科目の教科書の解読にも応用した実用的に使用できるよう,英語・数学・国語・理科・社会・体育の現行の教科書を用いて調査し,問題点を調べ,現自動読取システムの汎用性を高めかつ問題点を調査した。
