本研究においては、1575年から1625年にわたり英国人によって書かれた南北両米大陸・中近東に関する紀行文を比較検討してきた。先ず、HakluytのVoyages and Discoveries (1600年出版)、PurchasによるPurchas His Pilgrimes(1625年)に編集されている紀行文に焦点を当て、16世紀の英国人が南米大陸原住民に対して抱いたイメージの比較分析を行った。例えば、Harriot、Laneの北米探検記、Raleghのガイアナ紀行、Bakerによる西アフリカ紀行文等における、裸体で生活する原住民に関する記述の比較検討から、異文化の観察記録は自国英国の社会背景や価値観と密接に関連していることが明らかになった。中近東については、コンスタンティノ-ブル(トルコ文化)に関する英国人の紀行文、特にSanderson、Moryson、Sandys、Lithgow、Coryateによる記述を検討した。この結果わかったのは、イスラム文化は概して否定的にみられたにもかかわらず、肯定的評価を下した紀行文作家もいたということである。例えば、Sandysはトルコの寺院の美しさを記し、Sandersonはトルコの社会組織が機能的に優れていることについて書いている。最も重要なことは、英国探検家がこの時期海外をめざしたのは、植民地化するためではなく、異文化から学ぶためであったということである。オットマン帝国(トルコ)から英国人が得た最大の教訓は、国教以外の宗教を信仰する人々に対する寛容の精神であった。こうした紀行文の比較研究により、そこに記されている異文化に関する情報や評価を収集・分析したデータベースを作成した。これは現在、約500以上の項目になる。今後はさらに、このデータベースを(創作)文学に表される異文化の描写へと拡大していきたい。
