Japanese hospitals meet managerial difficulties under the severe finacial situation. A professional position for hospital management like CEO has not yet established because many Japanese hospitals have developed from those owned by medical doctors themselves.A basic survey has carried out for 3 responsible persons in a hospital, i.e.a director, a chief manager and a general head nurse on the points of an educational history, present manegerial situation of the hospital, what manegement education should be, and so on. All hospitals with more than 300 beds (about 1500 hospitals) and 10% of those with less than 300 beds (about 850 hospitals) are the subjects, and about 1050 hospitals (45% of the subjects) have responded the questionaire. Detailed results were analyzed and reported.A professional staff for the hospital management should be educated in the postgraduate school including continuing education. So far Japanese universities would not introduce faculties or postgraduate courses for health care management. But recently, reflected by frequent manegerial difficulties of hospitals, several universities including medical schools try to arrange new courses on these areas. This survey is expected to contribute the establishment of basis of Japanese health services administration education.
