山形県内庄内地方の酒田市と鶴岡市を対象地として、大きく変貌しつつある農村社会の現況と家業経営体としての家の変容と再編の過程についての事例研究を、農村女性の生活と意識の実態に着目しながら進めてきた。その結果、日本有数の稲作地帯として全国的に見ればかなり恵まれた条件のもとにある庄内地方においても、今日の厳しい農業情勢のもとではもはやこれまでのやり方に安住することはできず、農家経営を維持するための経営上の様々な工夫を強いられている。このような経営上の工夫は、農家・農民生活を大きく変容させ、農村女性の生活と意識をもまた大きく変化させたことが、今回の調査から明らかにされた。兼業化が進行し、農外就労が拡大深化するなかで、今日の庄内地方における女性の就労形態として最も多いのは恒常的勤務に就く女性である。このような女性の増加は庄内地方の女性が恒常的勤務から得られる平均賃金180万円/年を基軸に農村女性の自己労働評価を可能にし、女性の労働の成果を家族成員に目に見えるかたちで示すことでその家族内での地位を向上させた。このような兼業化が進行する一方で、これまで水稲単作が支配的であった庄内地方においても、今日では水稲に加えてプラス・アルファ部門を積極的な収入源として位置づける複合経営化がある程度進展した。このような傾向は、あらたな女性農業者の誕生ともいうべき、従来の補助労働の域を越えたプラス・アルファ部門の基幹労働力として農業に専従する農村女性の出現をもたらした。このような農村女性の活躍に支えられた農家経営の再編によって、今日の庄内地方の農業が担われていることが、今回の調査から明らかにされたのである。さらに、このような農村女性が意欲的に活動することを阻む多くの問題状況も浮き彫りにされ、農村女性がその諸能力を十全に発揮しうる具体的な条件づくりの必要の緊急性が再確認された。
