都市米穀市場の地域構造研究天明期米穀市場は、全国的な米穀生産の動揺と遍在、投機主義の展開にも助長された新たな米穀取引資本・流通の形成、大阪市場を中心に全国流通を掌握しようとした田沼政権の経済政策の展開等を要因に、九州→大阪→江戸の米穀流通が多量にみられ、かつまた一方で大阪市場脱却を志向する中期藩政改革の緒動向により中央市場を介さない流通が活発に展開したことをあきらかにした。この点の解明は固定的な二大市場圏論から当該期米穀市場変動を説明してきた研究史を克服すると共に、諸地域米穀市場変動の有機的連関が全国的にみられたことを指摘することによって全国諸都市・諸地域での連鎖的な蜂起の経済的背景をあきらかにする結果となった。2.都市下層の社会的結合関係の研究大阪・長町の木賃宿街の研究をおこない、木賃宿街の規模・住人(働人=日雇・売春婦・袖乞等)の人数・日雇口入れの構造を解明した。十八世紀後半期には働人槽を中心に1400人以上が木賃宿街に集住しており、大坂打ちこわしの一つの発生地域として位置づいていったことを具体的に実証した。また、下層民衆の相対・節季払い・掛売りの日常慣行に注目し、その慣行の搗米屋や質屋らによる否定が打ちこわし形成の経済的観念として重要なことをあきらかにした。3.正義の象徴の文化的基盤の研究都市打ちこわしにおいて「惣町型」なるものが検証できるかどうかに関わって、元禄期前後の経済発展によって形成されてくる町人身分意識における天罰の観念を西川如見や心学の分析を通して解明した。また、更に一八世紀半ばにおける民間進仰や神観念の象徴化の過程についても検討した。以上の研究のために、三井文庫・国立国会図書館・大阪符立中之島図書館・大阪市立大学・大阪商業大学・九州大学・慶応義塾大学・長崎県立図書館・新潟県立文書館・東京都立中央図書館等において史料閲覧・調査を実施した。
