私は、単に表層的な事件の流れを追うのではなく、社会構造のレヴェルから共和政期ローマの政治を捉える、いわゆる社会=政治史を当面の課題としているが、本研究は、その一環として、トリブスと呼ばれるローマ市民団の下部単位のレヴェルから、共和政末期の政治を捉え直すことを当初の予定としていた。しかしながら、それ以前の共和政初期・中期に関しても、トリブスの内部構造がまだ充分に解明されているとは言えず、それ故、このトリブスというレヴェルから政治が論じられることが少なかったことに鑑み、まずは、共和政初期・中期のトリブスの内部構造の解明を目指すこととし、結果として、共和政末期にいたることなく、共和政初期・中期の考察に終始することとなった。その成果の一部は、「ケントゥリア民会の改革とローマ共和政中期のトリブス」という形でまとめることができたが、そこでは、紀元前3世紀の後半に行なわれたとされる「ケントゥリア民会の改革」、およびそれとかかわる諸事件の検討を通して、この改革の背景として、有力政治家たちがすでに自己のトリブスをかなりの程度掌握していたと考えられること、またたとえそうでなくとも、少なくともこの改革の後、トリブスという単位での権力の確立が政治活動上の必須要件となり、その形跡がわずかながらも史料に見られることが指摘されている。しかし他方、この検討の過程で、有力政治家によるそのようなトリブスの掌握が完全なものではなかったことを窺わせる事件も顕わとなり、共和政初期・中期のトリブスがどのような内部構造を持っていたのか、そしてそれがどのように当時の政治構造と関連していたのかについては、引き続いて考察が必要である。その上ではじめて、共和政末期についての考察もより有意義なものとなることであろう。
