古代エジプトの神々は、エジプト宗教一神教論が生まれるほどに実に多様に融合される。この神格融合の研究は我が国では全く欠いており、欧米学界に早急に追随する必要がある。この点についての欧米学会の理論的な動向の紹介は、すでに、拙稿(『関西大学文学論集』第43巻、1993年)において行った。本研究は、実証面での試みとして、先ずその複雑な神格融合の表現に何らかの分類基準を求めようとするものであった。多様な融合が見られる中で、特にオシリス神とラ-神の融合は、太陽神が毎夕、下界で死者の神と融合して、東の地平線で復活するという比較的体系的な形式を持っているため、最初の対象とした。当初の目論見では、ネフェルタリの墓に見られるオシリスとラ-の合成された姿のように、融合された画像を求め、両神の融合されるべき面をさぐり、その意味を考える予定であった。しかしながら、最も有益な資料であるアムドゥアトの第1時に、「彼(ラ-神)は、羊に変身する」とあるごとく、神の融合は、神の姿の一部を他の神の一部と合成するという形ではなく、存在そのものを完全に変えてしまうものであることが判明した。それゆえに、先のネフェルタリの墓の画像は前後関係の描写を欠いたためになされた圧縮した表現であって、全体的な流れの描写をもつアムドゥアトでは、合成された表現はなされていない。では、神々の融合はいかにして分類されるべきであろうか。神々は「変身」して、もし必要ならば融合して、現れる。その現れの場は、アムドゥアトに典型的であるが、「像」(Bild)、「肉体」(Leid)、「肉」(Fleisch)、「遺体」(Leichnam)、「姿」(Gestalt)など多様である。このことは、古代エジプトの神格融合について、神の部分と部分の融合ではなく、完全な属性を持つ神が現れる特定の場所に意味を求めなければならないと思わせる。
