本研究では、奈良県斑鳩町に在る「藤ノ木古墳」から出土した刀剣類の樹種同定を中心に、古墳時代の刀剣類の用材を調べることに重きをおいた。藤ノ木古墳からは、大刀5振・剣1本・刀子5本が出土しており、これらの遺物に残る木質を部位別に採取し、樹種同定をおこなった。大刀・剣の部位は、柄頭・柄間・柄縁・鞘口・鞘・鞘尻に、刀子は柄と鞘とに区分した。その結果、大刀1の柄間と鞘尻はツゲ・鞘はヒノキであった。大刀2は、柄部分頭は被覆した金銅板等の残存状態が良好で、樹種同定できなかった。鞘・鞘尻付近とも二葉松であり、遺物のX線撮影の結果からも一木でできていると判断された。大刀3は柄頭・柄間・鞘尻はツゲ・鞘はヒノキであった。大刀4は柄頭・柄間はツゲ・鞘はシイ属であった。大刀5は柄頭・柄縁・鞘口ともツゲであった。剣は柄頭・柄縁・鞘口・鞘尻ともツゲであった。刀子は内1本が完形品であり同定ができなかったが、あとのものは柄がツゲ・鞘がヒノキであった。以上の結果から、古墳時代の刀剣類は必ずしも柄と鞘とに同じ材を使っているわけではなく、むしろ木材の特性を活かした使い分けをし、朝鮮半島系と言われている円頭大刀(大刀2)には日本では良材とはされていないマツが使われていることも、この形態の大刀の意味を考える上で貴重なデータとなろう。現在奈良県下の遺物を調査中であるが、宮崎・東北の各県の資料も集まりつつあり、今後全国規模の息の永い研究にしていくつもりである。
