本研究では過去に収集した耳環のデータに基づき復原製作すると共に、配合比を変えた金・銀合金の標準サンプルを製作し(Au:Ag=97:3 W%〜 15:85 W%迄9種類)、実際の遺物との色調の比較検討を試みた。平成3年度の奨励研究において自然科学的手法を用いた耳環の製作技法の解明を通して古墳時代の鍍金技法の考察を試みたが、今回さらに調査を進めた結果、(1)金、銀以外に錫、鉛、鉄を素材とした耳環の存在が指摘されていたが、銅製や鋳造による青銅製の耳環が存在すること、(2)走査型電子顕微鏡およびX線マイクロアナライザーによる調査の結果、銅芯と表面層の間に中間層を持つものが多く、中間層に銀箔や銀板を使用したものが四国地方〜中部地方で確認でき、汎日本的に存在する可能性が窺える。(3)色調的には銀製品と思われるものの中に金の含有量の高い鍍金製品が存在すること、等を確認することができた(肉眼観察ではAu:Ag=50:50 W%位でほとんど銀製品に見える)。耳環の製作技法の解明および復原製作を通して鍛接や鑞付け、鍛金あるいは金・水銀アマルガムによる鍍金方法等、古墳時代の金工技術の一端を推定することができたが、中間層の銀板や中空耳環における地板の合わせ目の処理方法(中空耳環の場合、内面では合わせ目が確認できるが外面では全く確認できない)等、多くの疑問も残った。また器形的には単純であるが、その製作に当たっては専門的知識を多く必要とするものと推測され、土器等とは異なった流通経路(専門工人の存在)が考えられる。このことは先述の中間層を持つ耳環が汎日本的に存在かる可能性や住居址からの出土例が少ないことからも推測できる。今後は自然科学的調査と考古学的調査を総合的に行い、統計学的処理により全国的な集成を行うと共に製作技法や素材の差異により耳環に正確な呼称を与え、統一を図りたい。
