本研究ではまず、アメリカ映画等のレーザーディスクや、CD-ROMなどのメディア、および活字媒体に含まれる言語データを、コンピュータおよび周辺機器を利用して登録し、生きた英語のデータベースを作成した。そしてこの豊富なデータベースを活用して、生成文法理論における経路包含条件(Path Containment Condition; PCC)の応用と拡張の可能性を検討した。具体的には、英語の'so... that...'、'too... to...'など、程度表現とその補文構造をとりあげ、その統語的性質や、その成立、認可に関わるさまざまな条件について考察した。そしてこれらの構造を説明する上でも、PCCが有効であることを、実際のデータをもとに実証的に明らかにした。さらに、これらの構文の成立、認可に関わる諸条件の中には、LF(論理形式)のレベルではなく、S構造のレベルで適用されると考えられるものがあることも示した。最近チョムスキーを中心とした研究者たちが、minimalist programと呼ばれる新しい理論的枠組みを提唱している。彼らの主張によれば、意味のある言語レベルとして認められるのは、LFとPF(音声形式)だけで、従来のS構造は有意義な言語レベルとは認められない、とされている。しかし、本研究で扱った構造の認可条件の中には、S構造で適用されると考えざるを得ないものがある。とすれば、本研究は、S構造を意味のある言語レベルと認めない最近のチョムスキー理論に対して、その再考を迫る重要な一石を投じることになる。
