標準英語の文法規則が確立していく中で再分析の概念は重要である。イディオマティックな句動詞の場合、Denison(1985)によれば、1140年のPeterborough Chronicleにおいてgive upが初めて文字通りではなく′to surrender′の意味でイディオムとして使われたとされるが、MEの間はイディオマティックな用法はあまり発達しない。ただし、14世紀の料理書においては非常に高い頻度で句動詞が出現し、boil upなどのように行為の到達点を表す機能を担う例も見られる。15世紀のSermonsやPaston Lettersでは頻度は極端に落ちるが、特にPaston Lettersではhave away,have forth,have up,have outなどの例に見られるように、動詞の意味が希薄になり意味的に小辞に重点が移っている。16世紀以降になると現代英語のように小辞がAktionsartの意味を担って生産的になるが、これはSVOC構文の発達とともにそれに併せて小辞の意味と役割を再分析した可能性がある。助動詞doの発達は、Ellegard(1953)によれば15世紀のdoの出現率はどの構文においても10%以下で、16世紀以降急速に文法化されるが、使役動詞としての用法との関連も重要である。Paston LettersのMargaretの書簡では使役動詞としてdoが使われている頻度は、1440年代(1000語につき1.031語)から80年代(1000語につき0.298語)まで順次減少し、70年代ではmake(1000語につき0.358語)の方が高くなっている。行為の動作主を表さずに使われることが多い使役動詞のdoは強調のdoと曖昧になるため、使役動詞doの減少は助動詞という新たな文法範疇を可能にした。
