1.自然環境の持続的利用を可能にし得るような社会経済システムの形成を促すためには、自然資源の持続的利用と非持続的利用を区別しなければならない。論文「環境経済学における持続性と資源経済学における持続性」において、持続性の経済学的規定を検討した。「持続」とは人間社会活動の源となる資本が一定以上に保たれ事であり、その際、「資本」とは自然資本と人工資本とから構成されると考えると、自然資本と人工資本の取扱いにより四つの持続性基準が分類される。(1)人工資本による自然資本の完全代替を認める「極めて弱い持続性基準」(2)自然資本に下限を設けた上で、それ以上の自然資本については人工資本による代替を限定的に認める「弱い持続性基準」。(3)現存する自然資本の維持、あるいは増加を条件設定する「強い持続性基準」、但しこの基準は人工資本の増加は容認される。(4)現在の人間社会の活動水準そのものが持続性基準を越えており、人工資本の削減と自然資本の増加を考える「極めて強い持続性基準」。2.以上のような持続性に関する経済的規定の四分類を前提にし、ケーススタディとしてマレーシア・サラワク州林業の減価償却法による評価、及び大阪湾漁業のMSY(最大持続生産量)評価を行った。まず、マレーシア・サラワク州の自然林を対象とした林業では、持続収穫量は2.0m^3/ha・年と推計される。他方、今日までのサラワク林業は45m^3/ha・年の伐採を行ってきたと推計される。したがって、その減価償却費用は(43.0m^3/ha・年)×(伐採面積)×(市場単価)により求められる。大阪湾漁業ではシェ-ファー・モデルに依拠して、カレイ類についてMSYを求めた。その結果、MSYは630.1tであり、1980年代前半を除いて大阪湾カレイ漁業は持続的漁業であると評価できる。
