本研究の目的は、日本とアメリカの障害者に対するスポーツボランティア活動(障害者のスポーツ活動に参与しているボランティア活動)の実態を明らかにして、ボランティアの価値意識、継続意欲、ボランティア観、社会的背景などの比較を行い、両国のボランティア活動の継続規定要因を明らかにしていくことを目的とした。研究対象は、関東近郊のスポーツボランティア(車椅子バスケットボールのボランティア、障害児キャンプのボランティア、チアスキー教室のボランティア)123名及びアメリカの登録ボランティアのうちスポーツボランティアを行ったことのあるボランティア78名を対象として、郵送法及び直接インタビュー法による質問紙調査を行った後、両国より各5名を有意に抽出して直接ヒアリング調査を行った。調査項目は、価値意識、ボランティア観、活動に際しての阻害要因等であった。主な結果として、以下のことが明らかになった。1)属性は、日本が学生の割合が8割を占めているのに対して、米国では学生が約5割で社会人が3割を占めていた。活動は、日本が個人での活動が多く、アメリカでは、地域、教会、関係ボランティア団体等の集団で活動を行っているケースが多かった。2)「活動の価値意識」及び「ボランティア観」では、日本ボランティアは「社会的価値」を重視しており、アメリカのボランティアは「個人的価値」を重視している傾向があった。3)「ボランティア活動の阻害要因」では、日本のボランティアは、「時間の不足」「所属の理解の無さ」を上位に挙げており、アメリカのボランティアは、「活動上の価値観の違い」「経済的な援助」を上位に挙げていた。これらの結果より、アメリカのボランティアは、宗教より活動に関わっているケースが多く、活動の本質によって活動の継続が規定されており、日本のボランティアの場合、活動する上での実質的な問題が活動継続に影響していることが窺われる。
